Dosage Recommendations: As a dietary supplement, take the following dosages at bedtime:

Zinc and the immune system

Zinc is found in all cells within body and is also a constituent of over 200 enzymes. In reality, zinc is implicated in more enzymatic reactions than any other mineral found in mammals. Zinc is necessary for neurological development, protein synthesis , good skin, , smell, taste, reproduction,vision and and the proper healing of wounds,. It’s also one of the most significant factors in a strong immune system. Zinc is implicated in all facets of immunity, including the immune strengthening "T" cells that are required for immunologic responses.

The best sources of zinc are s fish, shellfish and red meats, with oysters comprising the richest source. Significant quantities are also located in various plant foods such as whole grains, legumes, nuts, mushrooms and some herbs. The zinc from plant sources isn’t assimilated well since it attaches to a fiber compound in plant seeds called phytic acid to form an insoluble zinc-phytate complex that can’t be absorbed.

A study published in 1997 in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition demonstrated that Chinese children receiving 20 mg of zinc supplementation daily received 10-15% higher scores on educational tests than unsupplemented children.

How come people can become deficient in zinc?

Zinc levels in the body may be lowered by the following conditions:

  • Copper ingestion
  • Diabetes
  • Diarrhea
  • Fiber consumption, which causes zinc excretion through the intestinal tract
  • High calcium and iron consumption
  • Liver or kidney disease

How much and when should I take zinc?

Children and adults require between 10mg and 50mg on a daily basis. Although the suggested daily value is 15mg, it’s typically acknowledged that 30 to 50% of ingested zinc isn’t assimilated due to complexing with phytic acid, perspiration loss, fiber travelt through the bowels, or because of the competition for absorption with copper, iron and calcium.

Kirkman® includes 10 mg of zinc in all Super Nu-Thera® products. Since there are absorption issues which were discussed previously, many physicians also recommend more zinc supplementation at some point after the evening meal or at bedtime. By taking it at that time, there will be no fiber, calcium, iron or copper passing through the system to intervene with its use. This should guarantee that adequate zinc gets assimilated in order to prevent a deficiency.
