Cod Liver Oil

Kirkman® presents cod liver oil with vitamins A and D in a nonflavoured liquid. Kirkman’s Cod Liver Oil is a first-class product that we think is far superior to other products on the market.

Every version of our cod liver oil products incorporate all natural vitamins A and D. No synthetic standardization has occurred. Additionally, our oil has been vacuum-dried and deodorized, plus it’s been run through a filtration and distillation process to take out heavy metals, pesticides and PCBs. A thorough analysis of the oil has verified the absence of these compounds to detectable limits. Results of these analyses are available on request.

Cod liver oil is being utilized in children’s health based on the findings of Dr. Mary Megson of Richmond, Virginia to assist in the absorbtion of vitamin A. Cod liver oil is comprised of 10% of the cis form of vitamin A, in addition to as "14 hydroxyretroretinol." Dr. Megson has discovered that these natural forms of vitamin A in cod liver oil stimulate retinoid receptors.

It’s important while using cod liver oil to be very careful in choosing a source. A lot of cod liver oils on hand in conventional retail stores are standardized with synthetic vitamin A palmitate. Moreover, a great deal of the oil available can be impure or contain increased levels of heavy metals, pesticides or PCBs. It’s also important to ascertain that cod liver oil is stable and doesn’t become rancid.

Cod liver oil can become rancid over time by exposure to air and heat by autoxidation. Once this happens, peroxides grow in the oil. Kirkman® includes vitamin E in our cod liver oil to prevent any possible oxidation process. Additionally, a peroxide test is performed on the oil to secure a value that will guarantee purity and freshness. The European Pharmacopeia permits up to 10.0 millequivalents/kilogram of peroxides in cod liver oil to be regarded as fresh and non-rancid. Kirkman’s producthas a exemplary peroxide value of only 2.9 mEq/kg.

Other properties of natural cod liver oil

Fish oils are typically a source of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Cod liver oil is no exception. Each ½ teaspoon of Kirkman’s cod liver oil contains 250 mg. of EPA and 250 mg. of DHA. Each of Kirkman’s cod liver oil gelcaps contains 50 mg. each of EPA and DHA.

Omega-3 fatty acids have been revealed to be crucial in cardiovascular health, neurological health and normal development,. Some of the doctors with whom Kirkman® works advocate supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids. A laboratory profile of fatty acids is oftentimes arranged to find which type of product is required.
